COURSE DESCRIPTION – Spanish Language and Culture, Fall Semester

This Spanish course is designed for students who wish to improve their Spanish and gain an understanding of the culture of Spanish society. The language lessons are participative and are aimed at putting grammar into practice, extending vocabulary, and developing oral and written skills. Lessons in culture afford students the opportunity to get to know and understand the way of life, customs and traditions of Spanish society and, in general, what the country is like. Students can also supplement their learning by taking part in optional socio-cultural activities and by going on trips (outside of teaching hours, and included in the course fees).

The semester Spanish Language and Culture Course consists of 255 class-hours of Spanish over 17 weeks. Classes are held mornings from Monday to Friday. Participants should have at least a lower intermediate level of Spanish in order to participate in this Spanish program. (A1 (Beginner), A2 (Pre-Intermediate), B1 (Intermediate), B2 (Advanced), C1 (Advanced High.)

ABOUT

The Spanish courses for foreigners at the University of Valladolid have been taught continuously for more than 65 years. Nowadays, Spanish lessons take place at the University Language Center, located on the Miguel campus, in a safe an easily accessible area providing an ideal setting for learning and practicing Spanish. The Language Center was opened in 1996 and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology in language learning: white digital boards and audiovisual equipment in its 22 classes. The Center also has a meeting room for students and a library with free-access computers and free Wi-Fi.

Our programs combine language teaching with complementary activities and trips, which help students to become immersed in the language and culture of Spain. International students are in constant close contact with Spanish students who come to the Language Center to study other languages. One of our main priorities is to foster language interaction. Students enrolled are issued with a student card which provides them with access to libraries and other University of Valladolid services.

SERVICES OFFERED

Activities: 4 x 4 conversation exchange, Cinema workshops, Listening to music (to learn Spanish vocabulary), Flamenco Workshop, History Documentaries. The Centre organizes a number of guided tours to various places of great interest due to their artistic and cultural heritage. Teachers specialized in art and history will explain the main aspects of each place together with what makes it so attractive. They carefully plan the route so that students can be given information concerning all of the socio-cultural, historical, and artistic aspects related to the trip.

Housing: The University of Valladolid Language Center offers a wide range of accommodation for students enrolled on its courses. Choose the one which best suits your needs. If you request shared accommodation, we will try to find you a flat mate using the following criteria: Likes, preferences and/or special needs mentioned in the application. Similar ages. Age ranges: from 18 to 25 years old, 25 to 30, 31 to 40, over 40. Availability of accommodation can only be guaranteed during the study program period.

HOW TO ENROLL

Registration for this Spanish program is an open enrollment format. There is no minimum required GPA. Recommendation letters are not required. The minimum age for enrollment is 18. Once you have chosen your course, you must complete the online form in the section REGISTRATION. This form consists of several sections and some of the fields are mandatory. Among the topics are those related to the course (to choose level, dates and duration), housing (family or apartment and dates), personal information (personal data) and the form of payment (credit card or transfer).

Once completed, the system will automatically send an email to the student with all the information.

Program Structure

The Diploma Course in Spanish Studies is offered at all levels, from Beginner Spanish to Advanced Spanish.

The course lasts 17 weeks and encompasses 255 hours. Students have 15 classes per week.

This programme of subjects is accompanied by a series of socio-cultural activities and trips to various places of great interest due to their artistic and cultural heritage.

Spanish Grammar:  Including grammatical and functional content, and developing oral and written skills (speaking, reading, writing, and listening). The course is taught at three different levels (B1, B2 and C1.1).

Oral Expression: Aimed at consolidating and expanding vocabulary and communicative functions.

Spanish Culture: Focusing on an understanding of everyday life and the characteristics of Spanish society as well as its customs and traditions.

Spanish Literature: Explaining the main aesthetic-literary movements in Spanish literature from its beginnings up to the 20th century, through authors and representative works from each period.

History of Spain: Analyses the most important periods and events in Spanish history.

History of Spanish Art: Explores the most representative examples of Spanish art from antiquity to the modern era.

Geography of Spain: Looking at the main natural, economic, and social features of Spain.
